Needle and Thread

Needle and Thread was inspired by a dumpster dive at Alco Metals, a metal yard in San Leandro, when they gave me over a hundred plasma-cut steel waste circles that I had found in their trash bin. The chain is approximately 50 feet long and includes pieces of wood, acrylic, and a stainless steel ring. At the time of making it, I had access to a forge and formed one ring-end of the connecting rods by heating and hammering. I made the brackets out of more steel rod and flat bar and designed them so that they will hold the chain on a vertical or horizontal surface, so both on a wall or a ceiling. The piece is currently installed at Octavia, a restaurant in San Francisco, and was exhibited at Heron Gallery, also in San Francisco, in February, 2025. The other photos below show the piece collapsed into a crate and in the Presidio of San Francisco.
