Ego and Ethos

2026 | Steel | 36” x 38” x 6”

This abstracted skyline was inspired by Howard Roark of Ayn Rand’s The Fountainhead. Roark designed solely for function, choosing to use steel, glass, and concrete because of their non-decorative honesty of purpose - steel supporting weight, glass creating barriers without blocking light or view, and concrete for its unpretentious, raw strength. He was relentlessly committed to his artistic vision, which he doggedly pursued despite what the “social media” equivalent of his time thought of him and his work. His character, his character’s foil - Dominique Francon, and the book itself, written by a woman in 1938, illustrate a male-determined world and the struggle women face existing within it.
