Bristle Weave
While running in San Francisco’s Presidio, I would occasionally come across uniform strips of 1/8” metal lying in the street. One day, after a street sweeper had passed, I realized that the metal strips were pieces of the street sweeper’s brush bristles that had broken off. I eventually got hold of a used set of street sweeper brushes, took them apart, and cleaned and straightened the metal. Bristle Weave is made solely with these metal bristles. The bristles stay in place due to the tension of the weave. I am drawn to metal as an artist, in part, for feminist reasons. It, and the techniques required to work with it, have traditionally been associated with men. While weaving may be traditionally associated with women, the woven metal “fabric” of Bristle Weave removes it from the category of stereotypical “women’s work.”
