A Clearly Marked Exit
The springs from the old trampoline that I disassembled were the “jumping off” point for this piece. They were used in a toy that provided hours of escape for many from boredom, from homework, from friend troubles. They took users to safe places outside … in sunshine, in shade, in daytime, in nighttime. It seemed appropriate that they could continue to provide a means of escape in another form. Imagine they are an exit, a path up the wall and out. As you place your foot in a leather foothold, how much would the springs lengthen? Would you use any bounce to reach the next one? Would you straighten your arms, leaning back, pulling on the handholds? Where would you go after your exit?
